Some practices are simple and straightforward: We practice yoga or we practice qigong or we practice mindfulness meditation. Others take a meandering path, dipping into a array of awareness practices as we slip easily downstream.
This 30-minute meditation is the meandering sort of meditation. We start with a gentle breathing practice designed to help cultivate balance and steadiness. Then we let go of shaping the breath and simply watch the breath. And then - as often happens - the breath meditation awakens a quiet light within and we find ourselves slipping toward lovingkindness practice.
Breath, body, mind, spirit love. They’re connected so deeply that it’s sometimes impossible to tease them apart. We start out stretching our hamstrings and somehow we end up communing with all creation. We sit down to meditate and we end up floating in an ocean of love. We begin practicing to save ourselves and we end up caring for the whole wide world. Pull one strand, and the whole tapestry shifts. What a strange and lovely mystery!
